Prior to joining Evantine Design in 2014, Adam worked his way up the floral industry ladder the hard way. From cutting stems in the early morning hours, to creating everyday arrangements-to-order, then becoming the lead designer and store manager at several event design companies, and on to sculpting award-winning floral designs at the internationally-acclaimed Philadelphia Flower Show. He’s a talented artist who puts family first. But, as with everyone on #TeamEvantine, there is more to learn about Adam. Here’s just a sample:
What is your current role at Evantine Design?
My job title is Senior Floral Designer. I’ve been working at Evantine for just a couple years but I already feel like I’m part of the family.
What are you known for professionally? What do you have a knack for?
I’ve only ever worked with flowers, and although I am experienced in all phases of floral design I’m known mostly for my bridal bouquets and wedding florals.
What three words would you like to hear your friends use when describing you?
Creative, efficient and driven. Handsome too, but one can only wish!
What’s the one problem you are best at solving for your clients and/or co-workers?
My ability to stay on task and focused on the project at hand. I have been the manager of the design room at several event companies in my career. It has always been my strength to keep my team focused on the unique style and look of each event, without veering off into La La Land. Not always the easiest thing either, I might add.
Before you started working at Evantine Design, what were you doing?
I’ve always been a floral designer, starting from the bottom making everyday creations, working my way up to retail manager of the first store I worked at, to creating award-winning floral designs that have been on display at the Philadelphia Flower Show. My most recent position was with Tim Farrell, the current President of the AIFD. I am currently working towards being accredited myself within the next three years.
Professionally, what are you most passionate about?
Color! Color is a very important aspect of what I do as a floral designer, from soft romantic shades of blush and coral to vibrant bold saturated colors. The color scheme is what really brings the theme of any party together. Working somewhere in and with flowers is truly my passion. I can’t imagine doing anything that didn’t involve designing flowers!
Okay, flip that around and share what you are personally most passionate about.
My three nieces are truly what I care about the most. Jodee, Sinder and Lexi are what keep me going. They are the light of my life.
When you’re not working in the floral studio at Evantine, or installing an event, where can we find you?
At the beach! It’s where I like to spend most of my free time. My family has a small property on Red Point, a small private beach on the Chesapeake. It is my home-away-from-home year round. In my opinion, there’s nothing more beautiful than snow on the beach and dusting the trees near the water. My favorite!
Did you grow up in the Philadelphia area?
On a small farm near Linvilla Orchards in Delaware County and I left there to pursue my creative passion for flowers!
Do you have a favorite guilty pleasure you’d be willing to share?
Cinnamon Dolce Lattes from Starbucks! LOL! Seriously, I think I’m down to about three-a-day at this point. But really my favorite obsession is antiquing. I’m a sucker for a gorgeous antique vase or unique vintage museum box. I have more than I’d like to admit in my collection.
We understand you are a huge animal lover, do you have a pet charity that you support?
The PSPCA because I love animals of all kinds. They can truly be inspiring. Each one deserves a place in someone’s heart and too many pets are often pushed aside for no good reason. I try to give of myself to any animal-related agency or charitable cause.
Do you have a favorite kind/type of event to work on or design for?
A wedding, because you are given the opportunity to bring a dream to life. There are many aspects of a wedding design, from bouquets and boutonnieres, to headpieces for pretty little girls, to just the right amount of candlelight and the perfect shade of lighting, to create the perfect environment on one of the most important days in that person’s life. It’s touching to be remembered for the huge part I played in making a magical, milestone memory. It’s really an honor.
We know you have won awards for your floral artistry, what’s the most recent?
I won a Blue Ribbon at The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show for my work in the designers studio!
What can’t you live without?
Simple. My phone. It’s my right arm but I think that goes for everybody these days, right? But other than that it would be my tool bag. I don’t leave home without it! Many times I’ve saved the day with a thing or two out of my trusty little tool bag…
Do you have a favorite hangout spot in Philadelphia?
The Philadelphia Museum of Art. I have a annual membership and go to the Art Museum as frequently as I can. I love all types of art and find it relaxing to stroll through the galleries, trying to put myself in the artist’s position when painting or sculpting. It truly gives a different perspective to each composition. And, gives me so much inspiration in what I do.
What advice would you give to your 23-year-old self?
Take advantage of every opportunity that is set before you! Think before you act, and take nothing for granted. I’ve learned a lot in the last 10 years and can’t wait to see what the next 10 have in store!
ADAM SALDUTTI is the Senior Floral Designer with Evantine Design.
